Harvard History Professor to Speak
at Union
Professor Charles S. Maier, the Leverett Saltonstall Professor of
History at Harvard University, will speak in the G.M. Savage
Memorial Chapel of Union University at 7:15 pm on October 21 as the
2003 Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecturer. His talk is entitled "An
American Empire? Imperial Histories and Their Lessons." The lecture
will be open to the public without charge. Dr. Maier will also
present an afternoon lecture (12:15 pm) in a classroom setting on
"What is a World History a History of? Defining Global History

History Honor Society Wins Best
Chapter Award
Union's Chapter (Delta-Psi) of Phi Alpha Theta, a national
history honor society, has won the 2003 Phi Alpha Theta Best
Chapter Award for its division. The award is the culmination
of a busy year for the chapter, which is celebrating its fiftieth
anniversary in 2003. In his letter of congratulation, Dr.
Jack Tunstall, the national organization's executive director,
wrote that "all your chapter's members deserve praise for winning
this truly prestigious award." Along with a Best Chapter
Award certificate, Union's history honor society will receive $250
from the national organization for the purchase of books for
Union's library.
Among its 2002-2003 activities, the Delta-Psi Chapter on
February 22 hosted the Mid-South Phi Alpha Theta Regional
Conference, where approximately 125 people were in attendance.

Mid-South Regional Conference Held at Union University
Union’s Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (national history
honor society) hosted the Mid-South Regional History Conference on
February 22, 2003. Approximately 125 people attended at least one
session of the conference, and participants were from 11 different
colleges and universities in West and Middle Tennessee and western
Kentucky . Joseph Webster of Union won the second place award for
best undergraduate papers with “Cartoons Go to War: The Use of
Animated Cartoons as Propaganda During World War II.” Union’s Joshua
Moore won third place with his paper on “The Armenian Genocide and
the Failure to Achieve Retributive Justice.”
