History Department Begins New Year with an Abundance of Activities
Sep 10, 2009
The history department began the 2009-2010 school year with an abundance of activities. The department launched its year at the Union University faculty-staff dinner on August 18. Sitting together at a reserved table, department members and their spouses enjoyed good food and a program of music presented by the Gettys. Two days later, all department members attended the faculty workshop that highlighted Dr. Michael D. Beaty, Professor of Philosophy and Chair of Department of Philosophy at Baylor University. At a faculty/staff luncheon the same day, the department’s Dr. David Thomas was recognized for fifteen years of full-time service to Union University, and Dr. Judy LeForge received a five-year service award; Dr. Keith Bates received recognition later for his five years with the school. On August 21, Dr. Bates spent the morning assisting students move into their dorm rooms, and on August 22, Dr. Stephen Carls joined Dr. Thomas in having dinner with new students interested in history. Ten history students sat with the two professors at tables set aside for history, and all became better acquainted with each other and with the department.
On August 24, Noah Arnold, president of the Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, and Elizabeth Blevins, president of the Rutledge Honorary History Club, represented their organizations at Union’s Student Life Fair. They, along with Dr. Carls and Dr. Bates, stood by a history department display and talked with a number of students who were interested in the department and its activities.
Finally, everyone moved to the classroom on Tuesday, August 25, when regular day-time classes began. Department faculty and students alike went into the classroom with a sense of excitement and anticipation.
