Jan 8, 2010
Dr. Stephen Carls, chair of the history department, received an Outstanding Service Award from Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society during the society’s 2010 biennial convention held on January 6-9 in San Diego, California. Dr. Jack Tunstall, the society’s executive director, presented the award to Dr. Carls at the convention’s Presidential Banquet on Friday, January 9. In his citation, Dr. Tunstall mentioned that Dr. Carls had joined Phi Alpha Theta at the University of Minnesota, served as the faculty advisor to Union’s chapter for 27 years, helped the society nationally in a variety of ways, and presided over the Delta-Psi Chapter’s success in winning seven straight Best Chapter Awards. Only four Outstanding Service Awards were given at the convention in an organization that has more than 850 chapters nationwide.
