History Department Participates in Several Events to Launch Academic Year
Aug 26, 2011
August 26, 2011 – The history department launched the new academic year with several faculty and student activities. On August 16, department members attended Union’s faculty-staff dinner where Dr. John “Chuck” Chalberg of Normandale Community College in Minnesota provided the evening’s program by doing an impersonation of the English writer G. K. Chesterton. Dr. Terry Lindley was recognized at the faculty-staff luncheon on August 18 for his 25 years of service as a Union University faculty member; he joined the history department in the fall of 1986. Dr. Stephen Carls and Dr. David Thomas participated in the new student dinner on August 20; several students sat at the history table to learn more about the department and each other.
On August 22, the history department had a booth at the annual Student Organizations Fair; student officers Caitlin Roach (president) and Savannah German (vice president) represented Union’s Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, while David Conway (president) was there for the Rutledge Honorary History Club. A number of students stopped by the booth to talk to them and to Dr. Carls, who served as the department’s faculty representative.
On August 26, Union held its annual fall convocation. The theme for the event was the importance of confessional commitments in the life of the Christian community. In fulfillment of that theme, attendees recited the Apostles’ Creed in segments that were coordinated with scripture verses and hymns, and Union University President Dr. David Dockery delivered his convocation address on “We Believe…in the Communion of Saints: Confession and Community at Union University.” In his presentation, President Dockery paid tribute to St. Augustine for providing in his City of God a defense of Christian beliefs and Christian community.
