Delta-Psi Chapter Wins 9th Straight Phi Alpha Theta Best Chapter Award
Aug 30, 2011
Union’s Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society received word from national headquarters on August 29, 2011, that it had won its 9th straight Best Chapter Award. Because the chapter has won the award more than five times, it also earned the Nels A. Cleven designation, which is the highest honor that Phi Alpha Theta bestows in the competition. Delta-Psi competed in the Division II category, which is for schools with between 3,001 and 6,000 students. In his letter of congratulations, Dr. Jack Tunstall, the executive director of Phi Alpha Theta, wrote that members of the Delta-Psi Chapter “have shown admirable dedication to the organization and truly exemplify the mission statement of Phi Alpha Theta.”
The Best Chapter Award consists of a certificate of recognition and a monetary prize of $250 to spend on the purchase of history books for the university library. With this year’s money included, the Delta-Psi Chapter will have contributed $2,250 to Union’s Emma Waters Summar Library since it won its first Best Chapter Award in 2003.
Key elements in the Delta-Psi Chapter’s success included the student members’ dedication and enthusiasm, strong support and participation from history department faculty, and excellent leadership from the student officers. The chapter’s student leaders in 2010-2011 were: Kate Cline (president); Katelyn O’Roark (vice president); Elaura Highfield (secretary); Joel Wellum (senator); and Megan Winters (senator). Dr. Stephen Carls served as the chapter advisor, and Dr. Keith Bates worked as co-advisor during the spring semester.
