Phi Alpha Theta Group Goes to Shiloh For 150th Anniversary Battle Reenactment

Mar 31, 2012

A group of 15 people spent Saturday, March 31, on a Phi Alpha Theta-sponsored trip to Shiloh to watch a reenactment of the Civil War battle of Shiloh on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. The Union University participants began their activities at the reenactment site by catching a glimpse of a fashion show that featured clothing styles from the 1860s.

As for the Shiloh reenactment, the thousands of people who attended the event saw parts of the battle for the Hornet’s Nest and the Sunken Road as well as the battle of the Peach Orchard and the Bloody Pond. More than 6,000 reenactors from around the country participated in the battle activities on March 31. Union University’s attendees first watched Confederate and Union cavalry units engage in battle and then observed Union forces launch an attack against the Confederates at the Peach Orchard.

Union’s Phi Alpha Theta participants later went to Shiloh National Military Park, where they went on a battlefield tour in their vehicles. They made stops at the Confederate Memorial, the Field Hospital, and the Bloody Pond. The group finished their day by enjoying dinner together at the award-winning Bell’s Drive In restaurant in Henderson, Tennessee.

The 15 Union travelers to Shiloh included: Dr. Stephen Carls, Dr. Alice-Catherine Carls, Dr. David Thomas, Mrs. Nancy Thomas, Patricia Dawson, Dylan Fowler, James Fowler, Savannah German, Jordan Haskins, Elaura Highfield, Cale Little, Hannah Marsh, Will Miller, Caitlin Roach, and Gracie Wise.
