History Department Holds Its Annual Awards Banquet

May 3, 2012

The history department held its annual awards banquet on May 3, 2012, to celebrate the accomplishments of several history students and an outstanding history alumnus. Sponsored by the Rutledge Honorary History Club, the banquet featured Dr. Micah Watson, a political science professor at Union, as its main speaker. Dr. Watson talked about the exploits of his great-great-grandfather, Emmet C. West, who served as a Union soldier in the American Civil War. Professor Watson based his presentation on West’s wartime recollections that were made into a book in 1905 with the title History and Reminiscences of the Second Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment. Forty people attended the banquet, including all of Union’s history faculty members and several of the students’ parents.

In terms of student recognitions, Caitlin Roach received the Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship Pin and Academic Achievement Award. David Conway, Elaura Highfield, and Caraline Rickard were winners of the History Major Award, while Hannah Marsh was given the History Minor Award. The department announced the second and third place winners in the Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Papers competition; Caraline Rickard won second place while Savannah German, Elaura Highfield, and Kaleb Noblett tied for third place. The first place prize in the history research competition was scheduled for Union’s Awards Convocation on May 4. The department gave certificates of recognition and copies of George C. Rable’s God’s Almost Chosen Peoples: A Religious History of the American Civil War to Savannah German, Caraline Rickard, and Caitlin Roach for their excellent paper presentations at the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Tennessee State University on March 24. Dr. Stephen Carls gave certificates of appreciation to Phi Alpha Theta President Caitlin Roach and Vice President Savannah German for their dedicated service to the society during the 2011-2012 school year. Dr. Terry Lindley, who was chief coordinator of the banquet, presented a certificate of appreciation to David Conway for his work as president of the Rutledge Honorary History Club in 2011-2012.

The department gave its Fourth Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award to Mr. H. Jack Holmes. The department recognized Mr. Holmes for his career of excellence in the practice of law, and so doing, it also highlighted his heroism as a soldier in the Vietnam War and his many roles as a community service leader in Jackson and West Tennessee.
