History Department Celebrates End of School Year with Phi Alpha Theta Cookout/Baby Shower

May 11, 2012

The 20th Annual Phi Alpha Theta/History Department Cookout, which included a surprise baby shower for Dr. Keith Bates and his family, took place at the home of Dr. Stephen Carls on May 11, 2012. Phi Alpha Theta students, history club members, all daytime history faculty members, faculty spouses, and several special guests came together on a beautiful evening to celebrate the end of a remarkable school year for the history department.

Dr. Carls paid tribute to a number of people during the evening program. Special recognition was given to Mrs. Ann Shaw, whose 89th birthday was on May 11. Dr. Bates and Dr. Judy LeForge received gifts for reaching new plateaus in their teaching careers at Union this spring: Dr. Bates achieved tenure and Dr. LeForge obtained the rank of full professor. Computer science major Jordan Haskins was recognized for his service as a volunteer at several Phi Alpha Theta functions. Dr. Carls also honored graduating history majors and Phi Alpha Theta graduates with individual tributes and gift bags. Senior history students in attendance included: Savannah German, Elaura Highfield, Hannah Marsh, Kaleb Noblett, Caraline Rickard, Caitlin Roach, Terilyn Wassell, and Megan Winters.

The surprise baby shower for the Bates family followed. Led by Phi Alpha Theta President Caitlin Roach and Vice President Savannah German, the shower included a specially decorated dessert table and a playpen containing gifts for the Bates family in celebration of the upcoming birth of their son Colin. All who were in attendance helped make the shower a memorable event both for the Bates family and the department.

As for food, the 47 attendees first enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips and guacamole dip, French roasted potatoes, and a tossed greens salad. Desserts, consisting of chocolate-covered strawberries, mini blueberry cheesecakes, and red velvet cupcakes, were served shortly after the baby shower began.
