I.  Scope of the Course

A survey of French history with a primary focus on the events that contribute to the development of  “French identity.”  Attention will also be given to the spread of French culture and language through immigration and colonization.

II.  Objectives of the Course

The aims of this course are to strengthen the student’s understanding and knowledge of French history and to improve written communication skills through answering essay questions and a research paper (guidelines will be discussed in class).

III.  Required texts

La civilisation française en évolution, Ross Steele, Susan St. Onge, et Ronald St. Onge (Thompson Heinle)

Recommended:

 - a bilingual French dictionary

 - English Grammar for Students of French

 

IV.  Method of Instruction

Students are expected to have read assignments prior to class.  Questions relating to each reading assignment will be due the following class period.  Answers should include information from the text book as well as lecture notes.  We will also take time for class discussion.

V.  Attendance

Regular class attendance is expected.  Discussion participation is included in the final grade.
