Notes from Union University

President, Union University

The people of God are those whom God has called by His grace. The Christian life is a calling; thus all Christians are called. We are called to salvation, to fellowship, to service, to holiness, and to an eternal inheritance by faith. This calling is described in the New Testament as heavenly, hopeful, and holy. The apostle Paul exhorts us to live worthy of our calling. The apostle Peter exhorts us to make our calling sure. Beyond this common call to all believers is a specific call for some to special ministries. This calling (vocatio) serves as a foundation, a grounding, a direction for our service in God’s Kingdom.

We invite you to join us this summer to “revisit your call.” It will be a time of renewal and refreshment with outstanding speakers like Henry Blackaby, Robert Coleman, Sam and Ruthe Shaw, Brooks Faulkner, Hal Poe, and Randy Pool. Please mark your calendars today and make plans to be with us for these special days on the campus of Union University.

Blessings,

Spiritual landmarks are an important part of a pastor’s ministry. For example, Jacob’s name was changed to Israel following his return to Bethel. A renewed commitment and dedication to God’s calling upon his life followed.

Last fall while attending the Michigan Baptist Convention, I had an opportunity to visit my “Bethel”....Columbia Avenue Baptist Church in Pontiac, Michigan. It was there in 1964 that God called me to preach. The pew where I sat was still there! I hurried to it and looked for the thumbnail prints on the pew in front of it. I was certain there would be some as I recalled my struggle accepting God’s call on my life.

We all need to revisit our call periodically. These experiences can help us to focus on God’s leadership and strengthen our ministry.

It is my prayer that this year’s Union University Pastors’ School will inspire and challenge your service for the Lord as you “Revisit Your Call.”

Serving with you,
