Learning Management System (LMS)

Any class at Union may have online resources and tools associated with it, available through the university's learning management system (LMS).

This can range from a syllabus for a face-to-face course up to all resources needed for a course being taught entirely online. Resources and tools available in the LMS include discussion forums, e-mail (internal to the class, separate from your uu.edu address), learning modules, secure quizzes and tests, assignments, assignment dropboxes, course calendars, course announcements, web links, document sharing, media (audio/video) sharing and more.

Union currently uses Blackboard for its LMS and is moving to MoodleRooms.

• Log into Blackboard at eclass.uu.edu
• At the top right of that page, be sure to click Check Browser the first time you use Blackboard on any non-Union computer, to ensure that Blackboard will operate properly.
• Student- and faculty-specific help pages are linked from that page.
• Beginning in January 2012, Union began an LMS transition to MoodleRooms. By the beginning of fall 2012, all of Union's online course resources will be provided using MoodleRooms. This will bring Web 2.0 tools as well as integration with Union's portal.

Students:

• Your professor will tell you if your course has any online resources and what your responsibilities are.
• You will have access to the course's resources beginning on the official start date for the course. Your access ends seven days after the official end date for the course.

Faculty:

  • Self-paced online tutorials about Blackboard
  • Blackboard user manuals (PDF files for basic & advanced use)
  • Mini-tutorials for related tools - Respondus LockDown Browser (test security), SafeAssign (anti-plagiarism), WebEx (web conferencing), audio/video media clips, etc.)
  • Blackboard-related handouts for faculty & students
  • Additional assistance & help
• Use of this system is guided by the Online Course Policies and Practices document. (To view this information, you will log into Union's portal using uu\ followed by your account/user name, then your Union password.)
• You will have access to the course shell after you are assigned to the course by the registrar. This typically occurs well in advance of the start of the term.
• When talking to textbook publishers about online content, be sure to ask for content that works with "Blackboard Learning System - CE Enterprise License Release 8," not Blackboard Academic content. Publishers may understand this distinction by telling them our Blackboard LMS is formerly WebCT.
