JACKSON, Tenn. – May 6, 2008 – Union University’s new Master of Social Work program has cleared the first hurdle in the accreditation process, and will receive a visit from the Council of Social Work Education in the fall.
The CSWE accrediting body recently approved the MSW program’s “benchmark one document,” which included such items as course syllabi, academic standards, field manual and student handbook.
After the CSWE visit in the fall, the group will meet in February to determine whether to grant candidacy to Union’s MSW program, according to Mary Anne Poe, chair of Union’s social work department.
“Our Master of Social Work degree is beginning in the fall, and we are now accepting applications,” Poe said. “The program won’t be accredited immediately, but that is standard procedure for new academic programs. Once we attain accreditation, it will apply to all students who were in the program from the beginning.”
In March, Union announced the hiring of Janet E. Furness as director for the MSW program.
