JACKSON, Tenn. – July 21, 2009 – Tom Madden, retired executive director for the Tennessee Baptist Convention died July 19 at age 90.
A native of Enid, Okla., Madden came to Tennessee in 1951 to serve as pastor of First Baptist Church, Greenbrier, after serving as a pastor in both his home state and in Texas. After several years as pastor of First Baptist Church in Tullahoma, he became the executive director of the TBC in 1979, a position he held until his retirement in 1989.
Union University awarded Madden with an honorary doctorate degree in 1979.
Visitation will be July 21 from 5-8 p.m. at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home in Tullahoma. The funeral will be at First Baptist Church in Tullahoma July 22 at 1 p.m., and burial will be July 23 at 1 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Jackson.
Due to worsening weather conditions, the Jackson campus will close at 3:30 p.m. today.
Evening classes at Germantown are canceled for tonight.
