JACKSON, Tenn. – Nov. 23, 2009– Union University graduate Lily Zopfi Glass was featured in the August issue of top art magazine Ceramics Monthly for writing a commentary on her last semester at Union.
Ceramics Monthly is an international art magazine and the best, most prominent one in the United States, said Lee Benson, Union art professor and department chair.
Glass graduated in December 2008, but was still at Union for the spring 2009 semester.
“It was stressful and hard,” Glass said, because she didn’t have people around her who were at the same place she was, since she had already graduated. “I forgot a lot of why I even started in the ceramics and why I enjoyed it.”
The article is about how she had to work through the stress of the last semester by making her work really simple, Glass said.
Glass said it helped her to “remember why I was attracted to the medium to begin with and why I enjoyed it.”
She explained that the article was written to inspire and encourage other artists to remember everything about why they started and love what they do.
“The greatest names in ceramics are regularly published,” Benson said. “The fact she got on the comment page is prominent. It is exceptional talent from an exceptional kid.”
Two other Union students have had their ceramic works published in the magazine in recent years.
“This just does not happen for schools,” Benson said. “This is a professional magazine. For three Union students to be published is just amazing.”
