JACKSON, Tenn.Sept. 28, 2012 – The fifth annual “Remember Me” commemorative walk for homicide-loss survivors will take place Oct. 1 at Union University.

The evening will begin with a photo opportunity for survivors at 4 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center, followed by a barbecue dinner at 5:45 pm.

Union University President David S. Dockery will give a short address at dinner that will lead to a candlelight walk of remembrance.

Anyone is welcomed to come to the walk as a witness, and are asked to arrive by 6:30 p.m. in black pants and a white shirt to distinguish themselves as Union students.

"It is a time for someone to take notice of the people these families lost," said Nita Mehr, professor of social work at Union.

As a survivor of homicide loss herself, Mehr also co-leads a homicide support group each week on campus that gives survivors a place to talk about what they are facing.

Liberty High School ROTC students will serve as the honor guards and lead the processional around Miller Tower. The walk will end with each survivor releasing a balloon into the night sky.

Each survivor will also be given a special gift in memory of their loved ones.
