JACKSON, Tenn. – Oct. 15, 2013– The Student Members of the American Chemical Society chapter at Union University received the Outstanding Chapter Award for the 15th straight year.
Randy Johnston, a university chemistry professor and the chemistry department chairman, said about 40 chapters out of more than 1,000 chapters nationwide were selected for this award, given by annually by the ACS.
“Only a handful of the chapters have received this award for several consecutive years, putting Union’s chapter in a select group of chapters from across this country,” Johnston said. “It is an affirmation of the great work our chapter does each year.”
Co-advising the chapter with associate chemistry professor Joshua Williams, Johnston said the focus of the chapter is to provide social, scholarship and service opportunities for members. Activities include departmental picnics, chemistry facility tours and community demonstration shows.
Kathy Shelnutt served as the society’s president last year, while James Clary is the current president.
