November 12, 2013 - A Message to the Union Campus from Chairman Hill

Dear Campus,

The Search Committee has been very busy refining the list of nominees. You may recall that we solicited approximately 7,500 surveys and received 1,603 responses with 373 free text comments and 123 nominations. Excellent input from the Union Community and excellent help from SIMA, our consultants.

The committee is working diligently to ensure that we have the right candidates; we remain on schedule to make a recommendation to the full Board of Trustees in the first quarter, 2014.

Thank you for your continued prayers as we enter into the interview phase of the process.

Gratefully,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

August 30, 2013 - A Message to the Union Campus from Chairman Hill

Dear Campus,

Welcome back to Union! I trust you had a wonderful summer and are ready to resume University life.

While you were away the Search Committee met regularly and made solid progress. Our session last week was very productive as we reviewed applications and processed nominations. The process is working extremely well, and we especially appreciate the prayer support undergirding all aspects of the search. We believe the spirit of unity pervading each meeting is a direct result of the many prayers on our behalf. We also appreciate the hundreds of survey responses and free text comments. They have been read and studied and studied again. Responses have proven to be very valuable as we have been able to develop the specific leadership qualities that the next president will be required to possess. We believe the Lord is using the entire process, from prayer to proposal, to lead us to His person.

Over the course of this semester we will refine the list of nominations, interview candidates and narrow the field. The final step will be a recommendation to the full Board of Trustees no later than next April. April 2014 will be here in the blink of an eye!

Best wishes for a productive and fun semester,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

June 28, 2013 - A Message to Union Family and Friends from Chairman Hill

Dear Union Family and Friends,

Thank you for continuing to pray for the search and transition process. The Lord is answering those prayers by blessing the committee with unity of mind and spirit as we proceed.

Great progress has been made in these early days of summer! We have reviewed over sixteen hundred surveys and consequently hundreds of free text comments and over one hundred nominations. As a result of your involvement in the process and with the support of SIMA, our consultants, we have clear understanding of the desired leadership qualities that will enable and equip our next president to be successful. The committee's attention now turns to our nominees, and to the receiving and reviewing of their applications. We look forward with eager and prayerful anticipation to the days ahead when we will begin the next phase of the search process, which will be the scheduling of candidate interviews.

Again, thank you for praying as we seek the Lord's person to be Union University's sixteenth president.

Gratefully,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

June 4, 2013 - A Message to Union Family and Friends from Chairman Hill

Dear Union Family and Friends,

Thank you for the overwhelming response to the survey! Your submissions represent the degree of interest and care you have about the transition process and they have been taken very seriously by the Search Committee. Thank you for your concern and thank you for your prayers.

We have compiled the results of the survey and are posting a summary on the search website for your review. We have read and are re-reading all of the free text comments and truly appreciate your recommendations and opinions. They have helped shape the Opportunity Profile that is now available on the website and will continue to help guide us as we move forward.

Our next step is to focus on nominees and their qualifications. In addition to the nominations received from the survey we are selectively placing notifications of the position in a few publications and placing information on the website for interested candidates. This part of the process is extremely confidential so the committee will not have very much information to report, however we will touch base from time to time.

Please continue to pray for us, for Dr. and Mrs. Dockery and for the new president and family.

Gratefully,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

May 17, 2013 - A Message to University Friends from Chairman Hill

Dear Union University friends,

We thank God for the way He is working in the Presidential Search Process and the way He is drawing so many to join in through prayer and fasting. Union students led our prayer efforts during the months of April and May and recently we "opened" the prayer calendar for faculty and staff. We have also heard from numerous people of their prayers on our behalf and draw a great deal of encouragement from their desire to lift the search and transition process to the Lord. All of these prayers are effectively felt and sincerely appreciated.

We also thank God for our "partnership in the gospel" with each church as we engage faith and learning for the students' good and for God's glory. If you, your staff and church members would like to join this prayer initiative we would be very honored. We do not want to presume upon your desire to participate, but on the other hand we do not want to miss an opportunity to enlist your support for this critical search.

Please consider choosing a day to pray and fast for our search and transition, especially in June, and if you feel comfortable please log the day(s) at uu.edu/president/search/prayer. No names are displayed, but it is extremely encouraging to know that as the days turn cardinal God's people are specifically praying for President Dockery and for the new President God will bring. "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." James 5:16

Thank you for supporting Union and for considering this request.

Gratefully,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

May 7, 2013 - A Message to Faculty & Staff from Chairman Hill

Dear Union family,

Many of you are aware of student participation in the prayer and fasting initiative and you may wonder if you will ever be able to join in. Well, now is the time! Actually, I know that you have already been praying because the Lord is helping us with the details of the search and His spirit of unity is evident in each meeting.

But, our goal for the initiative doesn't stop with the needs of the search and transition process. Rather it encompasses the needs of the entire Union family and we are trusting the Lord to do an unexpected work in each praying heart. As you well know we experience disablements, disease and death nearly every day so it's certainly appropriate for those cares to also be part of this prayer and fasting initiative.

Is fasting necessary? I really don't know, but I do know that the Lord encourages us to do so from time to time - and now would be a great time as we consider all that is happening in the Union family. I also know how encouraging it is to see the calendar turn cardinal at increasingly deeper shades and to realize that it represents the intentional focus of hearts and heads on Union University. Far beyond human encouragement I trust it is pleasing to the Lord.

So please join us in praying and fasting if you can. It will be sincerely appreciated.

Gratefully,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

April 12, 2013 - A Message to Students from Chairman Hill

Dear students,

Thank you for your prayers! I truly appreciate your participation in the prayer and fasting initiative and am very encouraged by the support that the calendar evidences. With the semester winding down and finals creeping up, it's remarkable that so many of you are devoting time to pray and fast. But I truly believe that in addition to leading the search committee to the right person, the Lord will do an unexpected work in each praying heart. And that's the ultimate goal.

Shortly we will open the calendar for the rest of the campus, trustees and friends, but thank you for leading the way!

Gratefully,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee

March 20, 2013 - A Message to Students from Chairman Hill

Dear Union students,

As you know, the presidential search committee has begun its work in searching for the next president of Union University. Many of you have already offered words of encouragement and asked about ways that you can be involved in the process. We are grateful for your support and want to offer you a practical way that you can help the search committee in this vital task.

Throughout the Bible and church history, God's people have often rallied in focused times of prayer and fasting for specific needs and purposes. We ask that you would see the need for a similar effort during such a time as this. It is impossible to overstate the importance of selecting a new president for the future of this institution that we all cherish. We need the wisdom, insight and discernment that can only come from the Lord if we are to select God's person for this significant role, and if we are to transition effectively to a new presidential administration.

To provide some structure to this effort, we have created a prayer and fasting calendar. We hope you will choose a day on which you will commit to praying and fasting for the whole presidential transition process - for the search committee as they seek a new president, for the person that God has chosen for the role, for Dr. Dockery as he moves into the position of chancellor, and for the entire Union community as it experiences these changes.

The time between April 1 and graduation on May 18 has been set aside especially for students to unite in prayer and fasting. As students select and submit a date, the colors on the calendar will change to reflect the number of people who have committed to pray and fast. Though this is a private matter and no names will be posted, we hope this will be a visible way to demonstrate how devoted Union students are to bring this transition process before the Lord.

On behalf of the search committee and the Board of Trustees, thank you for your prayers. They are tremendously valuable, and we are most grateful for them.

Yours truly,
Norm Hill
Chairman, Union University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee
