About the Hundley Center

The Hundley Center for Academic Enrichment has been provided by a gift from Union University alums and long-time supporters, Robert L. and Mary Ruth Pearson Hundley.  Much of their professional lives were dedicated to educating the children of Jackson and Madison County.  In retirement, that commitment continues in their generous support of the University in its effort to provide Christ-centered education that promotes excellence and character development in service to Church and society.

After serving in the Army during WWII, Bob received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. For a time, he was in insurance sales before taking a position with the central office of Madison County Schools.  In 1952 he received the Master of Arts from Vanderbilt University.  Bob retired as Director of Federal Programs for Madison County Schools.

Mary Ruth received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956 and taught school in Bemis for a time.  Upon receiving her Certificate in Library Science from the University of Memphis she was promoted to Library Supervisor for Madison County Schools, a position she would hold until retirement.  In that role, Mary Ruth was responsible for setting up libraries in the 22 schools then in the Madison County system.

The Hundley Center for Academic Enrichment was opened in February 2005.  Located on the second floor of the Emma Waters Summar Library, the Hundley Center is a distraction-free environment with ample space for labs, private or group study rooms and for student tutoring.  Peer tutoring is offered free of charge to any student desiring help at any level.
