The School of Pharmacy at Union University

Greetings to all Current and Prospective Pharmacy Students!

Kim M. JonesCongratulations to you for choosing such an exciting and dynamic profession! Pharmacy student life at Union University will serve to help you develop as a future practitioner and allow some fun along the way too. Involvement in pharmacy organizations is essential to help mold you into the highly respected professional you want to become. Professional organizations will not only provide you with continuing education opportunities, but they will also give you the chance to network with colleagues from around the nation and form lasting friendships as well!

Pharmacy students at Union University will have many opportunities to participate in local, state and national organizations. Locally, our students can become members of the West Tennessee Pharmacists Association, which meets multiple times throughout the year right here in our own backyard! Pharmacists from Jackson and the surrounding areas gather for continuing education opportunities, networking and a good meal. Students will have the opportunity to meet many of their potential preceptors and possible employers at these meetings.

The Tennessee Society of Student Pharmacists (TSSP) is the student organization of the Tennessee Pharmacists Association. TSSP allows students to participate in a pharmacy organization at the state level. Fellow pharmacy students at both the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University have been working hard to restructure the student society, which will allow our students to become active members during their first professional year. Membership in this society will promote intercollegiate relations and help Union students to realize the impact this association has on the working life of a pharmacy professional. In October 2008, our inaugural class will elect two members-at-large to serve on the TSSP Leadership Team!

National organizations available for Union students will be chosen with input from members of our inaugural pharmacy class. There are many great student societies to be involved with at the national level and we are excited to bring those opportunities to campus in the months to come. As our students begin their third and fourth years, they will be eligible for induction into various honorary academic and leadership societies. We have an exciting road ahead of us!

Pharmacy school is indeed what you make of it. At Union University, we are building a different kind of pharmacy school from the ground up. I do hope that you will help lay the foundation for future students who will look up to you and follow in your footsteps. You've worked hard to get here... I urge you to leave a great lasting impression!

Sincerely,
Kim M. Jones, Pharm.D., BCPS
Director of Student and Professional Relations
