Adventures in Physics Summer Enrichment Program

Union University is offering a summer enrichment program for talented youth in grades seven to nine.  The program will be offered June 9-19 with meetings from 1:00 to 4:00 Monday through Thursday each week.  The program will be conducted by physics professors Dr. Kyle Hathcox and Dr. David Ward.

Participants will be exposed to a variety of topics and activities, including lots of hands-on experiments and demonstrations.  Some activities and experiments, such as computer simulations can be done at home.  Although we have an ambitious schedule, we expect to touch on each of the following incredibly cool subjects:

Introduction to science and physics

The scientific method and data collection

Data analysis via graphing

Forces and motion

Newton’s Laws

Energy and power

Heat and temperature

Solar energy

Heat transfer methods

Electricity and magnetism

Electricity and electrical power

Generators and motors

Cost of electrical appliances

Electromagnetic waves

Light and optics

Telescopes and microscopes

Lasers

Waves and sound

Loudness and pitch

Vibrations and resonance

Modern and nuclear physics

Relativity

Quantum mechanics

Radioactivity and half-life

Nuclear power

Scientists and the future

Responsibility of scientists

There will be a $150 registration fee that will cover materials, refreshments, etc.  Parents will be invited the last day to view some of the activities their children have been doing.  Enrollment is limited to 15 participants and the class is anticipated to fill.  If you are interested complete the attached registration form and return as soon as possible.
