GRADE LEVEL: First Grade

This learning web will be teacher led due to the reading skills and
level of first graders.

Language Arts
Develop oral language - 1.1.01 i Use of familiar texts for recitations.
Develop and maintain phonemic awareness-
1.1.04 a Recognize words that begin with the same sounds.
1.1.04 c Identify rhyming words.
Develop and use decoding strategies-
1.1.05 d Apply long and short vowel rules when decoding.
Demonstrate knowledge of standard English spelling-
1.3.03 c Spell 3 and 4 letter short vowel words and
phonetically spell sight words correctly.
1.3.03 d Alphabetize words to the first letter.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Computer, printer, Microsoft Word and Excel, and the Internet.
SCAFFOLDING:
The teacher has already led the class through lessons using internet educational websites, Microsoft Word, and Excel Spreadsheet. If symbols are use at the end of the direction, the students have already been instructed as to their meaning. These symbols aid in recognizing the direction as well as save time. The language arts lessons in the classroom repeatedly include beginning letter sounds, rhyming words, recognition and comprehension of sight words, weekly spelling lists, and alphabetizing. Therefore, the children will be familiar with these terms on all of the activities. The scaffolding lessons that follow will act as a review and assist the students in these particular activities using the above mentioned applications.
WORD PROCESSING USING MICROSOFT WORD
1. Open the word document .☺
2. Type your first and last name and the date.__-__-__
3. Practice typing 5 of the current week's spelling list, select
enter after each word.
4. Print document.
5. Do not save.
6. Go to File: Exit.
CREATING A SPREADSHEET USING MICROSOFT EXCEL
1. Open the spreadsheet .☺
2. Type your first and last name and the date. __-__-__
3. Practice using this spreadsheet by clicking on cell A1 type in
ABC.
4. Tab over to C1 type in XYZ.
5. Click on B6 type in 123 456.
6. Print document.
7. Do not save.
8. Go To File: Exit.
PROBLEM:
The class has been studying farm life during science for the last few weeks. In an effort to prepare to visit an actual live farm on an upcoming field trip and incorporate language arts activities across the curriculum the following activities will be need to be accomplished. The activities will enhance the language arts standards being taught and enhance the science unit on farms as well as integrating technology into the classroom. Thus the problem provides meaningful solutions through learning from the teacher, the classmates, and technology across the curriculum.

Chicken Stacker. It is a fun game to learn short vowel sounds from easy to
hard. Begin with the easy game and proceed with success to the more
difficult levels. Follow the directions and when finished go to "Home" at

6.Click on Sight Word Practice Using Animal Eyes to help you learn and spell sight words on the Dolch list. These are words that are commonly used in reading. The levels increase in difficulty and award certificates can be printed at the successful conclusion of each level. (1.3.03c) (Application and Analysis)

ASSESSMENTS:
All of the website activities and games listed above will be assessed using observation by the teacher and peer mentors to ensure that students are reinforcing and enhancing their learning experience using innovative technology during class time. A grade of satisfactory or non-satisfactory will be considered in the content area for language arts. Some of the activities that have several levels which increase in difficulty may generate an award certificate that can be printed out. A numeric grade will be assessed for the Microsoft Word Spelling/Rhyming Document and the Microsoft Excel Alphabetizing First Letter Spreadsheet. The numeric grading scale is as follows:
93-100% Excellent
85-92% Above Average
78-84% Average
70-77% Below Average
