Greek  Mythology

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Tennessee state educational standards for seventh and eighth grade ESL students at a high intermediate level include:
7-8.R.1 - The student will develop reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of print and non-print texts.
7-8.W.7.k - Use computer technology to find information, to create reports and presentations, and to support research.

WHAT WE WILL DO ON THE COMPUTER

We will visit a website, answer questions in a Microsoft Word document and create a Power Point presentation. Some of you have not had much experience with these activities before, so I will walk you through the different steps. Don't panic! It may seem difficult at first, but it really is not that hard, and you will learn skills that will help you in other classes and with other projects.

THE PROBLEM

As you know, we have been learning about ancient peoples and their stories in our High Point textbook in Unit 5, which is titled, "Stories to Tell." In this computer exercise, we will be traveling back in time to ancient Greece. We will be learning more about the gods that were so influential in Greek culture. Have fun and enjoy the ride!

HERE WE GO ... WE'RE ON OUR WAY ...

ACTIVITIES

1) Go to the website Mythweb. Click on "Gods" at the type of the page. Then click on the pictures of the various gods to read about them. It's OK if you can't understand every word. These readings are fairly challenging. Just try to get the main idea. (knowledge and comprehension)

2) Next, go to the Greek God Quiz and answer the questions. You can refer back to the website by having a split screen, which will show both the quiz and the website. (analysis)

3) Then, you will create a Power Point presentation on a Greek god by clicking on Power Point. When the "File Download" box pops up, hit "Save" and then save to the desktop. Enter your name where it says "File name." Hit "Open" when you're told the download is complete. You will create a title slide with the name of the god you select as well as your name and your source of information: Mythweb.com. Next, write details about the gods on following slides. You must have at least three slides including the title page. (application, synthesis, evaluation)
