Super Sprouts!

Curriculum Area:  Science/Math
Grade Level:  Kindergarten
Duration:  One week
Scaffolding: The teacher will lead these activities as students are developing skills.  Each student will have basic click and drag computer knowledge as well as color and number knowledge.  The teacher or teacher assistant will be available before activities to help student(s) who require assistance.
Objectives:  TLW explore and label the parts of a plant.  TLW identify what a plant needs to grow and recognize different seeds grow different plants.

Supplemental Activities

Problem: The town of Seedling needs a new crop of sprouts but they don’t know where to start or what to do!  Come help us dig for clues and we’ll get a sprinkling of ideas and grow along the way.

Clues

Clue 1:  Everyone will move to the carpet area and listen to the teacher read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.  At the end of the story the teacher will check for comprehension by asking questions and discussing the story. Afterwards, students will move in designated groups to assigned centers to collect new clues. (comprehension, knowledge, synthesis, evaluation)

Clue 2: Click on the happy face to play the color by numbers game.  The student will click and drag to the correct petal. (knowledge, application, synthesis)

Clue 3: Click on the sun to play the match the numbers game.  The student will click and drag pictures to the correct number.  Upon completion  the student will print a copy of finished assignment. (knowledge, synthesis, analysis)

 

Clue 4:  Click on the hand or sunflower to listen to the stories.  After listening to the stories, the student will illustrate their favorite part of the story in their journal. (comprehension)
 
Clue 5:  Click on the flowerpot.  The student will copy vocabulary words by typing them in the box provided near the picture.  The student will print a copy of completed assignment. (comprehension)

Clue 6:  Click on carrot to see where food comes from.  Students will observe the lifecycle of 5 plants and learn that the parts of plants can be look different. (evaluation)

Clue 7:  Teacher will lead the class in planting individual seeds in plastic cups.  Teacher will demonstrate adding dirt to cup, seed to dirt, water to cup, and place them in a warm sunny place to wait for sprouts. (application)
