Your parents have saved $2500 to update your bedroom.  Choose furniture, accessories, bedding, lighting and window treatments to be included in your dream room within your budget allowance.

Activity One:  Search internet catalogs for design ideas, furniture, and accessories.  Develop and write a brief description of your dream room as a Word document.  This description should include your preliminary selections including color choices, any theme you may have chosen and preliminary bedding and furniture choices.  Use 1” margins and create a title which is centered on the page in bold letters.  Use Comic Sans MS font, 14 pt.  (Comprehension)

Activity Two:  Calculate the amount of money within your budget of $2500 for each category listed below:

Activity 4:  Make final furniture selections.  Remember, you must have a bed, dresser, and mattresses.  Other pieces are permissible as your budget allows.  You may incorporate your current furniture to save money if it fits into your design plan.  Calculate sales tax (9.25%) on each piece and total.  Submit on notebook paper.  You must show your work!  Does it fit into your furniture budget?  If not, choose an alternative plan and submit that also. As you make your furniture selections, copy pictures of your selections into a Word document with one inch margins and two columns.  Include the URL address for that item and the price.  Create a header with your name: Furniture.  Place in your project folder. Activity 5:  Make final bedding selections.  You must include bedspreads or comforter sets and sheets.  Any accent pillows you want must also be included in this category.  Calculate sales tax (9.25%) on each piece and total.  Submit on notebook paper.  You must show your work!  Does it fit into your bedding budget?  If not, choose an alternative plan and submit that also.  As you make your bedding selections, copy pictures of your selections into a Word document with one inch margins and two columns.  Include the URL address for that item and the price.  Create a header with your name: Bedding.   Place in your project folder. Activity 6:  Make final window treatment selections.  You must include something to cover the windows for privacy such as blinds or curtains that close completely.  Calculate sales tax (9.25%) on each piece and total.  Submit on notebook paper.  You must show your work!  Does it fit into your window treatment budget?  If not, choose an alternative plan and submit that also.  As you make your window treatment selections, copy pictures of your selections into a Word document with one inch margins and two columns.  Include the URL address for that item and the price.  Create a header with your name: Window treatment.   Place in your project folder. Activity 7:  Make final lighting choices.  Will you replace a ceiling fixture?  Choose bedside lighting and any accent lighting you may want.  Calculate sales tax (9.25%) on each piece and total.  Submit on notebook paper.  You must show your work!  Does it fit into your lighting budget?  If not, choose an alternative plan and submit that also.  As you make your lighting selections, copy pictures of your selections into a Word document with one inch margins and two columns.  Include the URL address for that item and the price.  Create a header with your name: Lighting.   Place in your project folder. Activity 8:  Make final accessories choices.  Choose wall hangings, decorative pieces and paint.  You will need one gallon of paint to completely cover your walls.  If your plan includes painting the ceiling, you will need to purchase a gallon of paint for that also.  Calculate sales tax (9.25%) on each piece and total.  Submit on notebook paper.  You must show your work!  Does it fit into your accessories budget?  If not, choose an alternative plan and submit that also.  As you make your accessories selections, copy pictures of your selections into a Word document with one inch margins and two columns.  Include the URL address for that item and the price.  Create a header with your name: Accessories.  Place in your project folder. Activity 9:  Now that you have all elements of your design plan, you must evaluate your total budget.  If you went over in one area, you will need to compensate in another area and may need to go with an alternative plan in one category or eliminate some items.  In Excel, create a spreadsheet and include each element of your design plan.  You will need four columns titled Item Description (cell A1), Budget Category (cell B1), Price (cell C1) and Price with tax (cell D1).    After you have entered in all of your items, sort the items by category.  Add the amounts in columns C and D on the row immediately below the final item in each column using a formula.  Print your spreadsheet.   (Evaluation)      Sample spreadsheet

     
Activity 10:  Create a PowerPoint presentation to display the elements of your design plan.  Create a title page, a page for pictures from each of the categories (furniture, bedding, window treatments, lighting and accessories). Include a final slide with your Excel table to provide documentation of your budgeting process.  (Synthesis and evaluation).

Activity 11:  Finalize student folder with corrected copies from all of the activities.  Make sure all papers from each of the activities is included.  (Synthesis)

Activity 13:  Print the rubric for the learning web.  Evaluate yourself with comments and an assigned score for each activity.  The scores you assign yourself will not change my evaluation.  You will receive full points for thoughtfully and completely evaluating your project.
