How Much Does it Cost?

Grade Level: 9-12

Lesson Designer: Brian Moore, B.S.

State Standard: 2.0 Algebra- Students will describe, extend, analyze, and create a wide variety of patterns and functions using appropriate materials and representations in real-world problem solving, and will demonstrate an understanding of the behavior of a variety of functions and their graphs.

2.1 analyze mathematical patterns related to algebra in real-world problem solving;
2.9 interpret results of algebraic procedures;
2.14 use linear programming to solve real-world problems

Materials Needed: One computer per student; Excel, Word

Duration of Learning Web: 2 Blocks

Scaffolding Activities: Students in this class have completed a research paper on a historic Mathematician that utilized working with a Word document. Excel will be introduced through the following tutorial:

Excel Practice

Adaptations: Students who have not acquired the prior knowledge of patterns and functions that is taught during class lecture will be given extended time to complete assignments.

 Extra activities will be provided for students who have completed the learning web early.  Activities include additional workbook and textbook problems and manipulative activities that drive home the concepts that students have learned.  Peer tutoring support will be used to match a student who has finished with one who has not.

Statement of the Problem: Being a "mature and responsible" teenager, your parents have decided to give you a big lesson in responsibility. They have decided to buy you any vehicle of your choice under $13,000. The only catch is that you must pay for gas, insurance, and repairs. How much will it cost and can you afford it?

Here are your directions:

1. Find a vehicle of your choice within the pricing constraints. (comprehension)

Vehicle

2. Find a full coverage insurance quote for your vehicle. (comprehension)

Quote

3. Create a budget using an Excel spreadsheet of your present situation. (application)

Budget

4. Conduct an functional analysis of your situation and define the function as increasing or decreasing. Submit analysis in paper format utilizing a Word document. (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)
