The Elements of a Plot

Content Standards:
1.0 Reading The student will develop the reading and listening skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of print and non-print text.
2.0 Writing The student will develop the structural and creative skills of the writing process necessary to produce written language that can be read, presented to, and interpreted by various audiences.
Objectives:
8.1.12g Determine the elements of the plot and trace them using graphic organizers (i.e. exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution/denouement).
8.2.13 Locate and analyze information to prepare written works and presentations.
Performance Indicators:
8.1.spi.4 The student is able to identify on a graphic organizer the points at which various plot elements occur.
8.2.spi.20 The student is able to react and respond to content area information in creative ways.
Grade Level: Eighth
Duration: One week

Problem: You have been asked to make a guest appearance on the hit show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. your assignment is to solve the mystery surrounding Herbert's death. Was it murder, an accident, or a wish come true? You decide. To solve the mystery, you must collect all of the evidence surrounding the events in the plot of the story about Herbert, "The Monkey's Paw."
