Objectives and Curriculum Standards  

Special Education: Yvonne Stewart

Statement of the problem: We are cooking in the kitchen today.  Our job is to make sure we don't run out of basic ingredients such as sugar,  juice, and flour.  We want to make sure we have enough ingredients left to complete our recipes without going to the store.

     
     

 

Activity 1 The students will define the following terms:  fraction, numerator, denominator, least common multiple, mixed number, improper fraction, and lowest terms.  The students will create a table by using the spreadsheet application.

The students will use the information from this website to create a spreadsheet. Print the sheet and place it in their fraction folder.  Discuss the terms in class.

Activity 2

METHODS

The students will copy and paste  the two methods of subtracting mixed numbers.  They will complete this by using Microsoft Works. Guided practice will be done in class using word problems related to cooking recipes, sewing, and building.  All work will be placed in their fraction folder. (10pts)

Activity 3

The students will complete online lessons on converting from mixed numbers, converting to mix, subtracting with different denominators, and subtracting mixed numbers.  (They will solve ten problems per lesson, print the results, and place in their folders.)

Activity 4

I will ask the students various questions related to the recipe that requires them to apply the appropriate math applications to solve the problems.
