Tennessee Curriculum Standards: Content Area-Reading/Language Arts

5.1.12 Experience various literary and media genres.

    1. Read and recognize various literary (e.g., poetry, novels, historical fiction, nonfiction) and media (e.g. photographs, the arts, film, video) genres.
    2. Predict and determine the sequence of events in a story including possible problems and solutions.
    3. Identify the conflict of the plot.
    4. Interpret a character's feelings and identify his motives.
    5. Trace changes in the main character and describe how this affects the plot.
    6. Make inferences about print and non-print text.
    7. Identify how culture, ethnic, and historical eras are represented in print and non-print texts.
    8. Compare and contrast events and characters using evidence cited from print and non-print text(s).
    9. Compare and contrast different versions of the same stories/events that reflect different cultures and/or different perspectives.

Materials Needed:

One computer per group; PowerPoint; Paint; Word, Accelerated Reader, Books: The Three Little Pigs, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs,  Cinderella and Cinderella Skeleton

 

Duration of Learning Web:

1 week for an hour a day

 

Scaffolding Activities:

Scaffolding activities will be completed prior to the learning web in class.  The teacher will read two versions of the Three Little Pigs and discuss the similarities and differences.  Using Paint draw a picture of the their favorite version of the Three Little Pigs.  Students will visit a website for a tutorial on PowerPoint and take quizzes on how to create a PowerPoint presentation.  Go to PowerPoint in the Classroom and click on number 1. Meeting PowerPoint. Students will follow steps 1 through 8 of the tutorial web site.  The students will write a summary of their favorite story using Word and print work to be turned in to the teacher.  Go to Virtual Gravy Greetings and follow directions on how to cut, copy, and paste. Students need to know this in order to complete the learning web.

 

Adaptations: 

Students will work in groups of 2, decided upon by the teacher.  The teacher will place student into groups based on ability of strengths and weaknesses to ensure success.  Pairs will teach students cooperative learning and the positive influence of working together.

 

Statement of Problem: 

 Did you ever have your feelings hurt?  Did someone ever point out your differences from others?   How did that make you feel?  Cinderella and Cinderella Skeleton are two stories that are alike, but have many differences.  What are those similarities and differences?

 

Directions:

1.  Research the internet for the differences between Cinderella and Cinderella Skeleton.  Read and discuss the opinions of different authors on the differences between the stories. (Comprehension, Evaluation)

2.  Research the internet for the number of versions for Cinderella.  Copy and paste into Word and print their documents of versions that they collected. (Comprehension, Analysis, Synthesis)

3.  Students will take Accelerated Reader test on computer on the original Cinderella story. (Application)

4.  Paint their favorite scene from the story of their choice.  Print picture to be turned in to the teacher. (Synthesis)

5.  Create PowerPoint presentation on the similarities and differences in the stories.  The student will create four slides (1 title slide, 1slide showing similarities, 1 slide showing differences, and 1 slide with a picture related to one of the stories that has been copy and pasted). (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation)
