 K.3.1 The student will identify, describe, and create basic shapes and describe relative positions and directions.

a. Match terms with given shapes (circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles) when shown in various positions.

b. Recognize basic properties of and similarities and differences between simple geometric figures (e.g. number of sides and corners). 

c. Reproduce and create circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.

d. Reproduce and create structures using three-dimensional shapes.

e. Combine two-dimensional shapes to make pictures.

f. Recognize and show terms of relative position and direction in a variety of situations (e.g. over, under, forward, backwards, between, right, and left).

 

 

 
Materials Needed:  One computer per group; Microsoft word; Internet access; Construction paper shapes, one sheet of construction paper per child, and glue

 

 
Duration of Learning Web:  One week

 

 
Scaffolding:  This is a teacher-led activity intended for a kindergarten class. The children should be familiar with correct gluing procedures, basic computer skills, and color recognition.

 

 
Statement of the Problem:  The Three Little Pigs need your help! The Big Bad Wolf has struck again! He's blown down two houses and is working on the third.  Can you help the Pig brothers rebuild their homes? So grab your hammers and your hardhats and let's get to work!

You will use paper shapes to construct a house on a piece of costructon paper. You will type your

name as the builder, and I will type what shapes you used to build your house. This will be the label

for your house.  (Teacher will use Microsoft Word to assist students in making their label.)
