Time: The duration of
these activities are one to two weeks long. Each day spend 30-40 minutes
on each activity or at the pace of the children.
Make sure that each day you reinforce the book by reading daily.
Scaffolding: The activities are lead daily by the teacher. Prior Knowledge: Make a graph of the types of coverings students wear on their head in the winter (mitten, gloves, neither). Discuss why we wear hand coverings and the difference between gloves and mittens. The teacher will also discuss animals that live in cold climates. The students should be familiar with writing or dictation of stories. Prior to the students work on the computer, the teacher will demonstrate step by step the process it takes to complete the activities.
Adaptations: Boardmaker Computer software program, Writing with Symbols computer software program, Voice Output Device (Big Mac single switch), Sign Language, Digital Camera
Introduction and reading of the story: The teacher will start the lesson by showing the children the outside cover of the book and point out different things in the picture. Once the teacher has pointed out several pictures, then the teacher asks the children questions "what do you think the story is about" or "what animals or characters might be in the book." Next, the teacher needs to introduce the author of the book. Finally, the teacher opens the book and begins to read the story orally. Make sure that you point out the characters on each page.
Sequencing the Pictures: The teacher will pass out sets of all the characters in the story. As a whole group or individually have the students place the characters in order as they remember them from the previously read book. If the students are doing this activity as individuals the teacher will monitor the student's progress by walking around the room.
Drawing Characters: The teacher will ask the students to recall the characters from "The Mitten." Have the students draw at least one animal from the story. Students can draw more that one if they would like to.

Writing: The students will write their own sequencing story using different animals. The students will be expected to include 4 animals of their choice and create a problem that each animal tries to solve. The teacher will monitor the student's progress by walking around the room.
Use the Computer: Using PowerPoint, the teacher will direct the students to the computer to show them step by step instructions on how to create a PowerPoint presentation in two or three small groups. The PowerPoint presentation will be 8 slides. Each slide will have one animal on it. The animals should be in the order as they were in the book
Arts and Crafts: The students will have a printout of the animals in the book. They can choose the animal that they want to make a mask of. The students will color the mask and create eye holes. The students will punch holes in the sides of the mask and tie a string to each hole in order for them to wear the masks. The students will then present their masks to the class. They will have to line up in front of the class in the order of the animals were in the books.
Assessments: The teacher will assess by observation, viewing the PowerPoint presentation and by discussion.
