Tennessee Modern Foreign Language Goals and Objectives
GOAL TWO: Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures Standard 2.1 Students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of daily life, traditional ideas and perspectives, institutions, literary and artistic expressions, and other components and aspects of the cultures being studied.
GOAL FIVE: Participate in Multicultural Communities and Global Society Standard 5.1 Students will use the language both within and beyond the school setting with representatives of the target cultures in a variety of ways.
Objective: To locate and name all 20 Spanish-speaking countries (one is a territory), identify unique products that they sell, convert their price to U.S. currency, and then present three of your favorite artisan crafts.
The countries will be presented in a PowerPoint presentation, which relates one unique detail about each country's special crafts. The student will visit on-line stores that sell international crafts and set up a table on Excel, identifying three products in the table, the price in U.S. dollars and the price in foreign currency, converting where necessary. The international crafts information will be listed in a table created, including country, item, price in foreign currency, and conversion.
Higher Order Thinking: The student will analyze information, convert foreign currency, and create a PowerPoint slide presentation.
Materials: Computer, Internet, PowerPoint, Excel
Duration: Four days in the computer lab.
Scaffolding: This is a teacher led activity intended for level two of Spanish. The students should be familiar with the 20 Spanish-speaking countries or territories. They should be familiar with cultural differences. They should also be familiar with basic computer navigation skills. The teacher will demonstrate each part of the lesson prior to students participation and help with Internet, Excel and PowerPoint activities.

Problem:
You are consultants hired by an international import company and have been ordered to identify the 20 Spanish-speaking countries and territories. As a consultant, you will visit these countries and determine the artisan crafts that would be most marketable to teens. You will know the value of the product in US dollars and foreign currency in order to report the 3 best items, in your opinion, to the board of directors. If your products are accepted, you will win a two week trip to Spain, all expenses paid with an additional incentive of $50,000 (for spending money!)
Actividad #1: You will begin by locating and identifying all 20 of the countries, then create a PowerPoint presentation identifying the countries with one of their artisan craft products available for purchase.
