Duration:
This activity should take one week to complete.  If needed, it can continue into the next week.

Scaffolding:
These activities are teacher assisted for a kindergarten class.  The activities will be completed in the second semester of the school year, so the students will already know how to use the internet, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.  The students will be familiar with changing font, color, and inserting clipart.  The teacher will demonstrate each activity before the students complete them.

Materials:
~Book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
~Computers with internet connection, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint

The Problem:
There is a caterpillar in our classroom and he is very hungry!  We need to find out how we can help him.  Let's read a book by Eric Carle to find out what we can do to help.

Activities!

Activity #1

We need to find out how we can help our hungry caterpillar friend.  First, you will listen to the teacher read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  Then, we will talk about how we might be able to help our friend.  After our discussion, I want to see what you remember about the story.  Click on the caterpillar below and see if you can answer all the questions about the story. (Knowledge)

Activity #2

For this activity, you will write a sentence that describes a scene from the story.  When you are finished writing the sentence, you will type it in Microsoft Word.  After you type your sentence, you will need to insert clipart to illustrate your sentence.  When you are finished, print your document and turn it in to the teacher. (Comprehension, Synthesis)

Activity #3

You will be working with a partner for this activity.  Think about the problem we have with the caterpillar in our room.  Together, you will create a PowerPoint presentation using 3 to 5 slides that will show the class how we can help our hungry caterpillar friend.  When everyone is finished, you will show your presentation to the class. (Application, Evaluation)

Assessment:

Activity #1 - The teacher will observe students answering the questions on the web site.

Activity #2 - The student will print his/her document and turn it in to the teacher and the teacher will check to make sure he/she has written a complete sentence and inserted a picture to illustrate the sentence.  If correct, he/she will receive a check in the grade book.

Activity #3 - The students will present the PowerPoint presentations to the group.  If students have created a PowerPoint presentation with at least 3 slides that tells the class how to help the caterpillar, he/she will receive a check in the grade book.
