The student will develop the structural and creative skills of the writing process necessary to produce written language that can be read, presented to, and interpreted by various audiences. (5.2.10, 5.2.11)

Materials: Computers with internet connections, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Printer
Duration: Five Days

Scaffolding Activities:

  • Students will achieve proficiency in basic keyboarding (and printing) and software applications of Word and Excel.
  • Previous student mastery will include friendly letter writing, understanding of artistic intent, graphics, summarization, and literary genres.
    How to use Microsoft Word and How to Use Microsoft Excel

Problem: Monet, Picasso, and Seurat have recently relocated to Vincent's Village. During the moving process their paintings' were misplaced. Visit each shop in Vincent's Village and complete the activities to identify which paintings belong to whom.

 

Monet's Music

 

Activity 1: Claude Monet is singing the blues. He has lost his painting with the orange sun. Write a short rap or poem to describe how he might feel. Click here to begin.

 


Activity 2: Pablo Picasso will need a menu to help his business "sail" through the roof. Help Picasso create a menu of 5 items using symbolic illustrations to decorate your masterpiece.  Click here to begin.

Assessment/Reflections:

Activity 1: The student will print his or her Microsoft Word document and will turn it into the teacher. The teacher will check to make sure the student has written a wrap or short poem that conveys the feelings of Monet. If the student has successfully completed the assignment, the student will receive a passing grade. (Synthesis)

 
Activity 2: The student will print his or her menu complete with symbolic illustrations from Microsoft Excel. The teacher will check to make sure the student has at least 5 menu entries, and has illustrated the menu using computer generated art. If the student has successfully completed the assignment, the student will receive a passing grade. (Application)
 
Activity 3: The student will print his or her friendly letter from Microsoft Word. The teacher will check to make sure that the student's friendly letter is about a day at the beach/pool. If the student has successfully completed the assignment, the student will receive a passing grade. (Application/Synthesis)
 
Activity 4: The student will turn in on notebook paper, the answers to reading comprehension questions on chosen artist. The teacher will check student responses to questions. The student will receive a grade based on the number of correct responses. (Knowledge)
 
Activity 5: The student will print his or her Microsoft Word document and will turn it in to the teacher. The teacher will check for clear expression of feelings of artists intent based on student choice of painting. If the student has successfully completed the assignment, the student will receive a passing grade. (Evaluate/Synthesis)
 
Activity 6: The teacher will observe student matching on the website. (Application)
