Pool Table Algebra

Tennessee State Mathematics Standard 5.0:  The student will collect, organize, represent, and interpret data and model situations to determine theoretical and experimental probabilities.

 
 

Materials Needed:  One computer per group; Excel; PowerPoint

 
 

Duration of Learning Web: Four 50 minute periods

Scaffolding Activity One: 
Students will open the Excel program by going to Start, All Programs, Applications, Microsoft Office, Excel. Columns are labeled by the alphabet and rows are numbered. 

1.  Starting in B1, type the following table:

4 Best Buy 24.99 19.99 59.99

2.  Highlight entire table and click on center justify icon.
3.  Highlight cell A1 and click on bold icon.
4.  Highlight cell A2 through A4 and change the cells to an appropriate font and size.
5.  Save to your student account.

 

Scaffolding Activity Two:
Students will create a four-slide PowerPoint presentation of school announcements.

1.  Open the PowerPoint program by going to Start, All Programs, Applications, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint.
2.  On first slide, click in the title box, and type an appropriate title.  Click in the subtitle box and type names of students in the group.
3.  Insert--New Slide.  This second slide needs an office announcement. 
4.  Insert-- New Slide.  This third slide needs an academic announcement.
5.  Insert-- New Slide.  This fourth slides needs a sports announcement.
6.  Format--Slide Design.  Choose background for your presentation.
7.  Save to your student account.

Scaffolding Activity Three:
1.  Open the PowerPoint program by going to Start, All Programs, Applications, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint.
2.  Format--Slide Layout.  Choose Title and Text Layout.  Click in the title box and type
     "Game Board".  Click in the text box.  Insert--Table--use 4 columns and 4 rows.  Click
     and drag border until grid is square.  Highlight all of the table.  Right click, go to
     Borders and Fill, click on Fill tab, and choose a color.
3.  Click on Align Right.  Type dimensions and color of table.
4.  Save to your student account. 

Statement of the Problem:  You will notice that the ball never seems to land in pocket A.  Will this always be true?  Explain.  Suppose you could have a Paper Pool table with dimensions of 250 by 500.  Can you conclude where the ball will land and how many hits will occur?

Project:
Part 1 Directions:
(Read all directions before starting)

1.  Click on the pool table.
2.  Click on the instructions icon and read all directions.
3.  Use the dimensions given and verify the

6.  Analyze your data and write a short paragraph in Word about what you have

Part 2 Directions:
You will be creating a 4-slide presentation using your collected data.
1.  Open PowerPoint.  On the first slide, choose an appropriate title for the project. Don't
     forget to put your names in the subtitle box.  Feel free to be creative with fonts and
     backgrounds.
2.  On the second slide, make a table (like the first one you made) using four of your
     results.  The title will be "Results Table".
3.  On the third slide,  choose one result, construct a pool table, square it up, and color
     appropriately.   In text box, list the dimensions, number of hits, and the pocket.
4.  The title will be "Conclusions".  Summarize your paragraph in text box.  Save in your
      account. (Comprehension, Synthesis)
