Duration:

Three days ( 3 One-hour periods )

 

Materials:

One Computer per 2 Students, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point, Printer

 

Assessment:

"What to take" power point presentation: 50pts.

"Important Items" survey: 25pts.

"Tool Identification" work-sheet: 25pts.

 

 

Objectives:

5.L2 Show an understanding of cause and effect.

5.R.7 Determine the answer to a literal or simple inference question from a passage.

5.R.9 Demonstrate understanding of sequence of events and processes as well as organizational patterns.

5.R.19 Understand the information in graphic material (e.g.. graphs, maps, charts, and diagrams.)

 

  

Problem:

Zachariah Johnson is a twelve-year old boy from Independence Mo. who is preparing to travel with his family to The Oregon Territory in l836 .  Their journey should take about six months and they will encounter terrible weather and treacherous terrain. What Zachariah and his family must decide is what supplies, tools, food, and personal items they will need for their trip?

 

 
     

Activity 1:

Purpose:  Your group will design a five page power point presentation to describe what the pioneers took with them on the Oregon Trail.  This activity will strengthen the ESL students organizational skills as will as sequencing.

Directions: Click tabs at the bottom of the page to view all open screens. You may shuffle at any time to view your separate pages.

1.  Click on the picture of the tool box to view the lists of supplies which you will use to complete the rest of the assignment.

2.  Click on the picture of the wagon trail at the bottom of the instructions to look at an example of what your power point will look like.  Use your own examples.  Do not copy the example. 

3.  To begin, click start.  Move the cursor to All Programs,  then to Applications, then to Microsoft office, and click on Microsoft power point.

4. Click the "Title" bar in the introduction slide, type in the title, "What the Pioneers Took With Them on the Oregon Trail".  Click in the box below the title and enter your names. 

5.  Click insert in the tool bar, then click new slide. 

6.  Click the "Title" bar, type  "Tools" as your title. Click where it says, "Click to add text".  This is where you will list 3 tools of your choice.  Type in your first tool choice and press enter.  Type in your second tool choice and press enter.  Type in your third choice and hit enter. 

7. Click insert in the tool bar, then click new slide.  Click the "Title" bar, type "Personal Items".   Click where it says, "Click to add text".  This is where you will list 3 personal items of your choice.  Type in your first choice and press enter.  Type in your second choice and press enter.  Type in your third choice and hit enter. 

8. Click insert in the tool bar, then click new slide.   Click the "Title" bar, type "Food".   Click where it says, "Click to add text".  This is where you will list 3 foods of your choice.  Type in your first food choice and press enter.  Type in your second choice and press enter.  Type in your third choice and hit enter.

9.  Click insert in the tool bar, then click new slide.   Click the "Title" bar, type "Household Goods".  Click where it says, "Click to add text".  This is where you will list 3 household goods of your choice.  Type in your first  choice and press enter.  Type in your second choice and press enter.  Type in your third choice and hit enter. 

10.  Go to the "File" menu and click on "Save As".  Type your name in the "file name" box to save this presentation.  Click save.

11.  Go to the "View" menu at the top of your menu bar.  Click "Slide Show" to preview your work.  Press enter to continue to the next slide.

WAGON TRAIL

 

Activity #2:

Purpose:  To be able to identify parts of the wagon in case of a breakdown along the trail.  This activity will enable you to understand a diagram.

Directions:

1.Click on the picture below to learn the parts of the Conestoga wagon. 

2.Click on the letters surrounding the wagon to identify the parts. 

3.After reviewing the parts, scroll down to complete the practice quiz.

 

 
Activity #3:

Purpose:  Your group will decided which items are most important for your trip.  You will evaluate the worth of each tool that is selected.

  Directions:

1.Go to  http://www.endoftheoregontrail.org/outfit.html to select at least 5 items to take on your trip. 

2. Click on the picture below to complete the writing assignment.

3.Give one sentence why each item is important for your trip using Microsoft Word.

 
Activity #4:

Purpose:  The purpose of this activity is to identify the uses of tools that would be needed on the Oregon Trail.  This activity strengthens chart reading skills, understanding the information in graphic material. 

Directions:

1. Click on the picture below to identify the tools that were used. 

2.  Move your cursor to each box to complete the category.

3.  Once finished, you may click on the pictures to check your answers.
