LIFE CYCLE OF A FROG

 

Grade Level: Second Grade

Introduction:
This learning web is an exploration to a thematic unit about life-cycles. The students will explore the life-cycle of a frog.

Tennessee State Curriculum Standards: (Grade 2)

Life Science
2.3.1 Recognize the basic requirements of all living things.
 Compare how plants and animals satisfy their basic requirements for life
2.4.1 Recognize that living things reproduce.
 Recognize that all living things come from other living things.
2.4.2 Recognize that offspring tend to resemble their parents.
 Match offspring with their parents.
2.4.3 Recognize that the appearance of plants and animals changes as they mature.   Recognize that as an organism grows, its appearance may change.
2.5.1 Recognize the differences among plants and animals of the same kind.
 Provide specific examples of differences among animals of the same kind.
2.5.2 Recognize that living things have features that help them to survive in different environments.
 Classify an organism according to the environment in which it can best survive

Objectives
    1.Complete virtual frog dissection.
                       2.Label the frog life-cycle diagram.
                       3. Complete scavenger hunt to find facts about frogs.
                      
4. Use answers from scavenger hunt to complete PowerPoint.
                    

Duration:
Two weeks.

Required materials: Computers with Microsoft Office, Internet accessibility and a printer with paper.  

Scaffolding Activities:  The students have access to computers during center time and they attend a weekly computer class.  They have basic computer skills. Pre-teaching activities involve creating a KWL chart, journaling (Language Arts), whole class discussion, and using Newbridge science materials (Reading). The students have visited the library and read books about frogs. The teacher will introduce new vocabulary words.  The students will explore different species of frogs and the countries in which they live ( Social Studies).

Congratulations! You are now working as a Veterinarian.  Mrs. Ribbit's son has discovered that his pet frog has hatched  tiny eggs. Mrs. Ribbit would like for you to explain the life cycle of a frog to her son. (comprehension, application, analysis and synthesis).

Directions:

                                 1.Click on the frog.
              
2.Read the directions to label the life cycle.
                         3.After you complete, the activity press the print button.

The Board of Veterinarians  has asked you to write an article about frogs. First you will go on a scavenger hunt to find your information. Then you will create a presentation to show the board the information that you included in the article. (Comprehension, application, analysis and synthesis).
