Ethics At Work Safety At Work

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Marketing & Management-I 11th & 12th Grade     Instructor and Designer: Mr. Charles Hale

WCDE/TDE Standard 10.0: Students will analyze how Marketing and Management I principles are applied in a specific work-based learning experience in two areas of this standard, 10.3 and 10.4.  They will use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet to research, brainstorm, manipulate, and communicate data and standards pertaining to safety and ethical behavior in the workplace.

Required Materials: One computer per student; Word; Excel

Allotted Time: 1 week (5 50-minute periods)

Procedures: On Part 1, students may work with a partner to collect the information and collectively brainstorm to complete the summary.  I will reserve the right to place you in groups according to the level of computer literacy as I see fit.  If there are any special accommodations, like smaller keyboards or any other adapting devices needed that I am not aware of, please let me know and we will plan accordingly.  If working in a group each student must submit a copy of the summary.  For Part 2, students must work at their own computer station unless they are employed at the same business.  Groups cannot exceed more than two members for those that work together.  Each student must submit a copy of the floor plan showing their knowledge of safety areas and first aid.

Part 1

WCDE/TDE Standard 10.3: Students will evaluate and apply principles of ethics as they relate to the work-based learning experience.

Problem Identified: Based on information gathered from employers in the community during the 2004-2005 school year, many working students, ranging in age from 16 to 18, are lazy, poorly mannered, and have a bad work ethic.  Students exhibiting these types of behaviors are easily subject to job termination, opening the door for harder working, more appreciative employees.

Directions: Students will create a summary to determine what type of employee exudes a good work ethic and take two on-line assessments to see how they compare to others in the nation.

1. Below are a list of websites that pertain to ethical behavior in the workplace.  Open up a new Microsoft Word document from Start-Programs-Microsoft Word and Save as Good Work Ethics in the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) drive using the disk provided.  Using no less than two sources including those below, compile a summary of work ethics and what someone with a good work ethic is like.  Your summary should have a cover page, be 1 to 2 pages, 12 Font, with double spaced text.  At the end of your summary be sure and list the websites where you obtained your information.  It has been a few weeks since we have covered Word, so if you have trouble remembering please ask myself or a neighbor.
BE SURE YOU SAVE TO THE DISK THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS AND WHEN IT IS COMPLETED.

*Plagiarism will result in a grade of ZERO.

2. After you have finished your summary click on the following link: My Work Ethic
Fill in the appropriate DEMOGRAPHIC, a word we should all know, information and press continue.  A 50 question, Occupational Work Ethic Inventory (OWEI) should be on your screen.  Take the test and answer the questions honestly.  There are NO right or wrong answers.  After completing the test click submit at the bottom right hand of the page.  Your results will appear on the screen and should look similar to 5.62 out of 7.0, etc,.  Record your results on your own paper and click continue.
The final page should show how your results and compare your scores to a national average of students just like you. (If any of your scores are below a 5.5, we need to talk)

3. After finishing the Occupational Work Ethic Inventory above, click on this link:
How Employable Am I?
Fill in the appropriate demographic information and press continue.  A 23 question, multiple choice Employability Skills Assessment (ESA) should be on your screen.

4. Label and record your scores for both tests on a sheet of paper.  Staple to the back of your ethics summary and put in the basket on the back desk.  You will have Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to complete this part of the unit.

Part 2

WCDE/TDE Standard 10.4: Students will employ the principles of safety to the work-based experience.

Problem Identified: After administering a multiple choice safety test provided by the state many students did not score highly enough to be considered passing the safety unit.  Many of the questions missed pertained to safety on the job.  Also, when asked where certain safety equipment was located many did not have a clue.  This could lead to possible injury or even death if students are not familiar with these elements.

Directions: Students will work alone, or in groups of two according to guidelines previously stated, to create a floor plan of their job site, noting explicit information on where safety and first aid materials are located.

1. Open a new Excel spreadsheet from Start-Programs-Microsoft Excel, and SAVE as Work Safety Floor Plan in the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) drive on the same disk as before.  High-light a 30 x 30 grid on the sheet. (Thirty rows down and over thirty columns over to AD) Go under Format-Columns and set the width of each column to 2.3 and click OK.  Go under Format-Rows and set the hieght at 16.75 and click OK.  Use this 30 x 30 space to represent your workplace. SAVE
SAMPLE FLOOR PLAN

2. Using shapes, drawings, clip art, etc., label everything in the store you can to show you are aware of all areas and surroundings in the building.  For example, if you work in a restaurant you will want to create and label the dining area and where tables are placed, a bar area if applicable, restrooms, kitchen, wait stations, etc,. SAVE

3. After labeling the main areas, and most importantly, use drawings, clipart, etc., to show all exits (If they are for employees only feel free to use an E, Customers-C, but if it is a designated Emergency Exit label it as such.) SAVE

4. Once exits are noted, depict and label everywhere there is a fire extinguisher, eye washing sink, hand sink, first aid kits, and anything else your business has for safety reasons. SAVE
You will turn in the disk to me for grading.

Grade Breakdown:
All Required Components: 30 Points
