CAPTURING THE MOMENT IN WRITING

LANGUAGE ARTS CONTENT STANDARD 2.0 The student will develop the structural and creative skills of the writing process necessary to produce written language that can be read, presented to, and interpreted by various audiences.    
     
LANGUAGE ARTS CONTENT STANDARD 3.0 The student will use standard English conventions and proper spelling as appropriate to speaking and writing.    
     
OBJECTIVE: TSW follow the 6 steps writing process to write expressively, using original ideas, reflections, and observations.    
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Mrs. Nelson and her class have just returned from the Land of Mute. The Mutations cast a quiet spell upon her rowdy students.  The Mutations gave Mrs. Nelson and her class a list of commands. The commands stated that the students must master the writing process and produce a variety of written assignments to break the code of silence.

 

 
GRADE LEVEL: 3RD GRADE

DURATION OF THE LEARNING WEB: 4 WEEKS    
SCAFFOLDING ACTIVITIES- The students have basic knowledge of sentence structure and they are also aware of the parts of speech. Students have used Applesworks word processing, PowerPoint, and Internet for previous assignments.    
RESOURCES NEEDED: Computer, Printer, Graphic Organizers, Clear Plastic Folders, Arts and Crafts Materials for folders    
SIX TRAITS WRITING STEPS ACTIVITIES    
     
 

ACTIVITY#1-WRITING STEPS

   
COMMAND#1- TLW collaborate in groups to create a list of commands on how to break the code of silence. The student will have 5 minutes to jot down ideas using a "Spider Map."  TLW go to website http://www.teach-nology.com/  and print off the graphic organizer. (Knowledge)

 

 
                 COMMAND#2- TLW create draft 1 using details from the Spider Map to form sentences. Students will be encourage to use descriptive language. The instructor will teach a mini lesson on adjectives and the TLW will go to website http://www.angelfire.com/ab/westmounthaiku/describe.html to complete activity on adjectives.    
                  COMMAND#3- TLW assemble with their literary groups to evaluate the first draft. The instructor will provide a rubric for peer evaluators to assess draft #1. (Application)  
                  COMMAND#4- TLW construct draft#2 using peer evaluator's comments to improve draft#2. (Analysis)    
                  COMMAND#5- TLW revise and edit draft#2 after which they will meet with the instructor for one-on-one conferencing about conventions. (Synthesis)    
                  COMMAND#6- TLW execute final copy using word processing in AppleWorks.  Student will retrieve clip art from website http://www.clipart.com/. (Evaluation)    
     
ACTIVITY#2- SHORT STORY    
     COMMAND#1- TLW write a short story describing the Land of Mutes . Go to website http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/language_arts/story/3/ to print off writing activity. (For help, see teacher's example and notice the underlined words.) TLW will use clip art to personalize their works and they are encouraged to be as creative as possible.  Mulatto Potato.doc    
     
ACTIVITY#3- POEM/CHANT    
   COMMAND#1- TLW create a poem/chant using descriptive words in free writing. (For help, see teacher's example) ALL ABOUT ME.doc

ACTIVITY#4- POWERPOINT

                  COMMAND#1- TLW create a PowerPoint presentation with three slides.  Slide one will consist of the Title and the student's name.  Slide two will tell three things they like about one of their three writing pieces.  Slide three will tell why they chose that particular piece. ASSESSMENTS:
  • Formative assessments will include: peer evaluations, writing prompts during morning work/journaling, and one-on-one conferencing. 
  • Students will submit a writing portfolio with the following items: descriptive paragraphs, short stories, poems, and a hard copy of their PowerPoint.  These items will be evaluated on the following: sentence structure, variety of descriptive words, and content.
  • For the summative assessment, the student will be provided a rubric with a point system.
  • Students will also have oral presentation assessments (i.e. Author's Chair).
