Duration:

  • This learning web should take 3 days to complete.

Materials Needed:

  • Computers with Internet access, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher

  • Dictionaries

Scaffolding Activities:

You will use and build upon the skills you have previously learned and practiced this year in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

If you need a reminder, visit these web pages:

How to use Microsoft Word

How to use PowerPoint

How to create a flyer using Microsoft Publisher

Prior knowledge:

  1. As a class we are going to brainstorm a list of anything and everything you think of when I say the word "volcano." We will use these words to help "jog" our memory to help us on our search.

  2. We are going to define important terms related to volcanoes by using a dictionary.

  • ash cloud

  • ashes

  • eruption

  • gas

  • lava

  • magma chamber

  • poisonous

  • vent

  • volcano

Statement of the Problem:

As a class, we are going to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands for a summer vacation. One of our adventures will take us to Mauna Loa, home to the world’s largest volcano that has erupted 33 times and it is certain to erupt again soon. Your task is to find out what we can do to better understand this phenomenon and affect of volcanoes on the environment.

Activity 1

The Earth's Crust and Anatomy of a Volcano (knowledge, comprehension, & application)

  1. First, open the Word document that contains the questions you are to answer for both websites:                                        Learning Web Internet Questions.doc

  2. Second, go to this website http://www2.nature.nps.gov/geology/usgsnps/pltec/pltec1.html#crust and answer the questions as you read. Your responses should be single-spaced and size 12 font Times New Roman.

  3. Next, go to this website http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ngkids/0312/main.html and answer the remaining question on the worksheet. Once you are finished, print the sheet and turn it in.

Activity 2

Famous Volcano Eruptions PowerPoint (knowledge, comprehension, & analysis)

  1. You will work in groups of 4 and you will need to tell me which famous volcanic eruption your group would like to research. Topic assignment is on a first-come first-serve basis, so let me know quickly which one you select.

  2. Next, you and your group will need to visit the websites underneath your topic and gather the information you think is important for your classmates to know.

  3. Then, you and your group will create a 4-slide PowerPoint presentation. The first slide needs to include the name of the volcano and your names. Slides two-four need to contain a summary of the information you and your group discovered. Here is the information you need to search for: When the volcano erupted, where it is located, and how the natural disaster affected the environment and organisms in it.

  4. You will need to print your self-evaluation rubric and remember to be honest! MyRubric - Self-Evaluation.xls

  5. After your group had completed the PowerPoint you will present it to the class.

  6. Remember to scroll to the bottom to "Assessment" to see the rubric for this activity.

Affects of a Volcanic Eruption (knowledge, comprehension, & evaluation)

  1. Click on the following link and read the different sections. When you are finished you need to answer the following question on a sheet of paper: "Describe the affects of a volcanic eruption on the environment and predict what you would do if you were ever faced with the immediate threat of an eruption."

Activity 4

Mauna Loa Volcano Flyer (knowledge & synthesis)

  1. You are going to create a flyer encouraging people to visit Mauna Loa in Hawaii, the island we will be visiting.

  2. Working in pairs, use the links below to become very familiar with the Mauna Loa Volcano.

  3. Next, open Microsoft Publisher and select Publications for Print, Flyers, Informational Flyers. Choose any layout you would like.

  4. Include on your flyer: at least 1 picture of the volcano (do not forget to state where the picture came from!), four to five facts about why a person should visit.
