Let's Get Froggy

Life Science

2.4.1 Recognize that living things reproduce.
 Recognize that all living things come from other living things.

2.4.3 Recognize that the appearance of plants and animals changes as they mature.   Recognize that as an organism grows, its appearance may change.

2.5.1 Recognize the differences among plants and animals of the same kind.
 Provide specific examples of differences among animals of the same kind.

Language Arts

2.1.08 Develop and use pre-reading strategies.

    1. Create graphic organizers (e.g., KWL, webs, lists, story maps, charts).

2.2.02 Write for a variety of purposes.

             c. Write to inform (e.g., friendly letters, two or three step directions, journals).

2.2.03 Demonstrate knowledge of standard English spelling.

    1. Arrange words in alphabetical order to the second letter.

Scaffolding

The teacher will lead lessons in PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Excel to begin this unit on frogs.  The lessons will include basic computer skills. To begin the unit of study the teacher will lead discussions about frogs, their environment, and life cycle. Students should have prior knowledge of Venn Diagrams, and ABC order before using this learning web.

Duration: Two weeks

Objectives:                                                                   

  1. Label the frog life-cycle                         

  2. Put words in ABC order

  3. Complete a graphic organizer

  4. Read content material about frogs

 


 

Problem

We have a new class pet, and his name is Tad.  Tad does not know what he is, and we need to help him discover what kind of animal he is. You will learn the life cycle of a frog so you will be able to help Tad.

 

 

Activities

 

Activity #1

You will read the story "Who Am I?" Click on the frog to find the story. Scroll down to Frog Stories for Kids then click. Choose the first story "Who Am I?"  and read it. (Knowledge)  

Activity #2

Click on the frog to go to Excel.  Put the words in ABC order and print when done. (Knowledge and Application)

 

Activity #3

Click on the frog to complete a Venn Diagram comparing a tadpole to a frog and print when done. (Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation)

 

Activity #4

You will use PowerPoint to complete the life cycle of a frog for a presentation. Click the frog to go to PowerPoint. When you finish print it. (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, and Synthesis)

Assessments

The student will print out completed activities and turn into the teacher. The teacher will check for completion and the students will be rewarded with a Froggy Fun Day.
