
Butterflies: Where do they come from?
Grade Level: Third Grade

Introduction: The purpose is to help the
learner become a better observer of butterflies and the stages of the life
cycle. The goal is that the learner will learn about what kind of plants
butterflies and caterpillars need. After this unit is completed, hopefully
students will want to make their own container butterfly garden.
Duration of project: Two weeks
Statement of the problem: Butterflies
are beautiful insects that we enjoy. We want to discover ways to keep them in
our environment. What will you do to help?
Scaffolding: Have books and magazines in the
room on butterflies, caterpillars, and container gardens.

Activities:

1. Click on KWL chart to the right and put your name at the top. Fill in
what you know (K) and what you want to know (W) about each of the four
stages of the butterfly’s life cycle. Do not save your work, and do not
close the KWL chart.
Read about the four stages of the
butterfly's life cycle by clicking on Egg, Larva, Pupa, Adult to the
right.
After you finish reading these
websites, complete the KWL chart by clicking again on KWL chart on the
right and filling in what you learned (L). When you have finished,
print your KWL chart. Then close the document but DO NOT SAVE.

4. Create a PowerPoint presentation
by carefully following these directions to show what you have learned. Work in pairs.
- Open PowerPoint. Click on New icon or File - New.
- Format - Slide Design. Select a color/design. Save
to a zip disk.
- Click in the top box on the slide. Enter your name.
Highlight your name and change the font, bold. Save.
- Click on the New Slide icon in the toolbar. In the
Text Layouts, select the Title and single bulleted list. Save.
- Click in the top box on the slide and type
"Butterfly Project". Adjust the font. Save.
- Click in the bottom box. Type your first point by
the first bullet. Enter. Type the second one. Enter. Type the third one. Save.
- Click on the New Slide icon. Under Slide Layout,
scroll down the right side until you come to Text and Content Layouts. Select one of
the layouts.
- Click in the top box on the slide and type what you
want. Save. Click in the bottom left box. Type your first point by the first
bullet. Enter. Type the second one. Enter.
- Type the third one. Save. Click in the right box
and select the Insert Clip Art icon. Select a clip art.
- Click on Slide 1. Edit-Select All-Slide Show-Slide
Transition. Save.
- Slide Show--Look at it. Click your way through your
presentation.
