Standard Number: 1.0 Culture
Culture encompasses similarities and differences among people, including their
beliefs, knowledge, changes, values, and tradition. Students will explore these
elements of society to develop an appreciation of and respect for the variety of
human cultures.
1.1 understand the multi-cultural components to world culture.
1.2 understand the development and migration of art, architecture, language, religion, music and theater.
1.3 understand the ways in which individuals and groups contributed to changes in social conditions.
SCAFFOLDING ACTIVITIES
In order to become more familiar with using your computer, click on each button below and complete each activity. When working on these activities it is not necessary to complete any of the alternate methods. When you are finished with each exercise, print out the finished product and staple all of the exercises together to be turned in.

THE PROBLEM
You are a
docent in your local
museum. Your museum will soon have an exhibition featuring ancient Egypt.
You are to complete this learning web in order to brush up on your ancient
Egyptian history.
DURATION
These activities should take
you three 90 minute periods to complete.
MATERIALS NEED
One computer per group,
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel
ADAPTATIONS
The class is made up of
students that are on various developmental levels.
Students will work in triads to research, complete the activities and present
the information.
In order to promote peer
mentoring, the students will be grouped so that each group is made up of
students at various levels. I also have some ESL students. For these
students I will discuss with his or her ESL teachers and determine what
would be the best course of action for these students in order for them to be
successful. Students that are unable to complete assignment because of
their reading level will work with his or her special education teacher in order
to complete assignment.
OBJECTIVES
1.) Summarize how religious beliefs shaped the lives of Egyptians.
2.) Describe how Egyptian society was organized.
3.) Identify the advances that Egyptians made in learning and the arts.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACTIVITIES
Activity 1.) The first activity deals with the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta Stone will be a featured item at your exhibit. Click on the following picture of the Rosetta Stone and follow the directions provided. Use Microsoft Word to complete your headline and brief news report. DO NOT SAVE YOUR WORK! Make sure everyone's name in your group is on your document and print it out to be turned in. (COMPREHENSION)
Activity 2.) You will be working with Microsoft Excel in your second activity. Your instructions are to open up the link dealing with Ancient Egyptian social structure. Using Excel you are to produce a table with each social class listed followed by each group's status and social contributions. In the header, headline the document EGYPTIAN SOCIAL STRUCTURE. In the footer list all of the individuals name in your group. Print out your completed spreadsheet to be turned in. Your Excel document should be set up like this:

Activity 3.) Your next activity deals with Ancient Egyptian daily life. Use this Ancient Egyptian Culture Exhibit web site and write a brief paragraph using Microsoft Word examining each following aspect of Egyptian culture: art, architecture, and religion. (ANALYSIS)
ASSESSMENT
Each activity will be worth 100
points total.
Content will be worth 50 points.
Completion and skills accuracy is worth 25 points.
Group participation is worth 25 points.
