Summer Enrichment Program 2009

meeting 1:00 - 4:00 pm each day

The Union University Physics Department is offering a summer enrichment program for talented youth entering grades seven to nine. The program will be offered June 15-19 with meetings from 1:00 to 4:00 each day. The program will be conducted by Union University physics professors including Dr. Bill Nettles, Dr. Ildefonso Guilaran, and Dr. David Ward.

Participants will be exposed to a variety of topics and activities, including lots of hands-on experiments and demonstrations. Some activities and experiments, such as computer simulations can be done at home. Although we cannot cover every topic in class, we will provide a notebook with information on each of the following subjects:

  • Introduction to science and physics
  • The scientific method and data collection
  • Data analysis via graphing
  • Forces and motion
  • Newton's Laws
  • Energy and power
  • Heat and temperature
  • Solar energy
  • Heat transfer methods
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Electricity, electrical power
  • Light, optics, lasers Telescopes and microscopes
  • Electromagnetic waves Lasers
  • Waves and sound
  • Loudness and pitch
  • Vibrations and resonance
  • Modern and nuclear physics
  • Relativity
  • Quantum mechanics
  • Radioactivity and half-life
  • Nuclear power
  • Scientists and the future
  • Responsibility of scientists

There will be a $125 registration fee that will cover materials, refreshments, T-shirt, etc. Parents will be invited the last day to view some of the activities their children have been doing. Enrollment is limited to 15 participants and the class is anticipated to fill. If you are interested complete the registration form and return as soon as possible.
