We had a coffee and donut drop in on Monday. As the students trickled in throughout the morning they enjoyed a Monday pick me up as well as the chance to interact with their professors in a casual setting. During a conversation with a student, one of the professors started drawing an equation on their children's coloring board. Guess that's when you know you're in the engineering department! The guest visit from one of the faculty's two small children was another blessing.
We had a demonstration of controls set up in the SUB on Tuesday. We had a lot of great interaction with the student body as folks dropped by on their way to and from meals.
We had the great unveiling of the 3D printer and had a great turn out of engineering-majors and other majors alike! There was even a cake to celebrate the occasion, with our logo.
We ended the week with a picnic and enjoyed the weather and great conversation. Another great chance to eat delicious snacks and enjoy one another. It was a blast!

Under the leadership of Union’s Engineering Student Advisory Council, the department recently formed the Lambda Pi chapter of IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu, an honor society for engineering students. We were pleased to have Dr. John Orr, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the national president of IEEE-HKN, attend the chapter installation and member induction ceremony on May 3, 2013. Inaugural student members are Zachary Baker, Rachel Carbonell, Meinrad (Alex) Charles, Lydia DeWolf, Joshua Guthrie, Jonathan Gwaltney, Joel Ingram, Phillip Johnson, Andrew (Chris) Love, Caroline McConnell, Grace Morriss, and Jonathan Vunk. Dr. Randy Schwindt, associate professor of engineering, and Mr. Ethan Wilding, director of special projects for the engineering department, were also inducted into the new chapter. Dr. Jeannette Russ, professor and chair of engineering, is also a member.
The Engineering Advisory Council met on November 21, 2013, and elected John Cole, Engineering Manager at Tennalum, to serve as Council Chair. We look forward to working with Mr. Cole as he assumes leadership of the group, and we extend our sincere appreciation to Bill Dement of Dement Construction Company for serving as Chair for the past several years. We also welcomed Rowland Fisher, Engineering Manager at Jackson Energy Authority, as a new member of the Council. We greatly value the input of our industry advisors, and we always enjoy hosting them on campus for our annual meeting.
Under the leadership of Dr. Don Van, the engineering department seminar series for the Fall 2013 semester was a great success, with four speakers presenting varied and interesting talks to the students and faculty. On September 30, Dr. Keith Anderson, a local engineering consultant, gave a presentation entitled “Image Processing using Neural Networks.” On October 30, Ms. Lee Bernheisel, an engineer with Maersk Line in Madison, New Jersey, presented information about her career path as a marine engineer, including some of her experiences as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed engineer. On October 31, our own Dr. Randal Schwindt, Associate Professor of Engineering at Union, made a presentation entitled “The Queen of Engineering: Aesthetics as the Über-Heuristic.” In the final installment of our Fall 2103 seminar series on November 20, Dr. John Blevins, an engineering manager for NASA in Huntsville, presented information about the Space Launch System, NASA’s deep space exploration rocket that is expected to have its inaugural flight in 2017.
