JACKSON, January 19-- Union University alumni and friends will reunite Feb. 16-17 for Fiesta '96: 'Nacho' Ordinary Homecoming."
Homecoming registration begins Friday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. in the University's alumni suite. Union's art department will accept original alumni works for display in an alumni walk-in art exhibit during registration. Alumni interested in displaying works should call Michael Mallard, chair of the art department, at (901) 661-5289.
A Homecoming chapel service is also scheduled for 10 a.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. Nathan Pillow, director of evangelism for the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention and a 1961 Union graduate, will be the guest speaker.
Alumni may choose between two dinners Friday evening. Traditional Mexican favorites will be served for students and alumni from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Cost of the meal is $6. The Third Annual McAfee School of Business Administration dinner will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Coburn Dining Room. At 7 p.m., Union's Student Activities Council hosts A Night on Broadway," a variety show, in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. Comedian Randy Riggle will emcee the event. Tickets are $5 general admission, $2 for students.
Following the variety show, Union's Student Alumni Association will sponsor an old-fashioned bonfire/pep rally outside the Penick Academic Complex.
A complimentary reunion brunch begins Saturday, Feb. 17, at 9:30 a.m. in the Palmer Activity Center. All alumni and friends are invited to attend, and reunions are slated for Union's classes of '45, '46, '50, '51, '55, '56, '60, '61, '65, '66, '70, '71, '75, '76, '80, '81, '85, '86, '90, '91 and the Golden Years" (all classes prior to 1944). Special reunions will also be held for alumni of the Baptist Student Union, the Cardinal & Cream/Lest We Forget staffs, Proclamation/Singers, and the departments of art, business, chemistry/physics, nursing, music, and religion.
Following the morning activities, Union's annual alumni reunion luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. Early bird tickets are available for $10 before Feb. 9 or for $12 afterward.
Union's class of 1963 will celebrate the recreation of The Circle" from the University's former downtown campus at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Plaza. At 2 p.m., Union's fraternities and sororities will host alumni open houses at the lodges.
Union's Homecoming basketball games begin at 3 p.m., when the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs play host to Freed-Hardeman University. The women's game begins at 3 p.m., followed by the men's matchup at 5:30 p.m.
Activities conclude Saturday evening at 9 p.m. when the Union University Players present Café Expresso Bongo," an evening of hip, not drip" entertainment. The coffee house will showcase a variety of poems, prose, music and drama in Union's W.D. Powell Theater. Alumni interested in performing a two to three minute piece may call David Burke at (901) 661-5287. Tickets are $4 at the box office and include dessert and coffee.
