UNION UNIVERSITY TRUSTEES APPROVE FACULTY APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS

JACKSON, February 23-- Union University's board of trustees approved a number of faculty appoinments and promotions today at the board's spring meeting.

Effective July 1, Donald Lester, chair of the University of Memphis' division of business, will become dean of Union's McAfee School of Business Administration and assistant professor of management.

David Gushee, acting associate dean of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's School of Theology and assistant professor of Christian ethics, was named associate professor of Christian studies. In another appointment, Cynthia Jayne, chair of Union's department of languages and professor of Spanish, was named director of international studies.

The following Union faculty received promotions for the 1996-97 academic year:

• Anna Clifford, promoted to assistant professor of early childhood education;
• Cathy Parrett, promoted to assistant professor of nursing;
• Roger Stanley, promoted to assistant professor of English;
• Wayne Day, promoted to associate professor of Christian studies;
• Kina Mallard, promoted to associate professor of communication arts;
• Barbara McMillin, from assistant professor of English to associate professor of English;
• Michael Penny, promoted to associate professor of music;
• Joanne Stephenson, promoted to associate professor of psychology;
• David McClune, promoted to professor of music;
• Pat Morris, promoted to librarian;
• James Baggett, promoted to university professor of history and political science.

Tenure was granted to the following Union faculty:

• Steve Arendall, associate professor of management;
• Kyle Hathcox, professor of physics;
• Mary Pratt, associate librarian;
• Andrew Roby, associate professor of music;
• Wayne Wofford, associate professor of biology.

The following professors also received departmental appointments:

• Ann Singleton, assistant professor of special education, was named chair of the deparmtent of education;
• Jan Wilms, assistant professor of computer science was named chair of the department of mathematics/computer science;
• Linn Stranak, professor of physical education and health, was named department chair;
• Michael Mallard, associate professor of art, was named department chair; and
• Charles Baldwin, professor of chemistry/physics was named department chair.
