UNION STUDENTS IN FREE ENTERPRISE TO HOST "JUNIOR SIFE" COMPETITION MARCH 6

JACKSON, March 1-- Union University's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will host 600 area middle school students Wednesday, March 6, for the team's inaugural Junior SIFE" competition.

The competition marks the culmination of a five-week project involving 25 sixth and seventh grade classes from Jackson Christian School, Northeast Middle School, and University School of Jackson.

Union SIFE members, modeling their own organization, are establishing the Junior SIFE" program by teaching free enterprise principles to the students. The students learn basic business principles, including economic terms, federal debt and deficit awareness, and techniques of starting and running their own business.

The free enterprise project is a favorite among our students," Leah Mangrum, a sixth grade history teacher at Jackson Christian School, said. They actually want to learn about free enterprise, and even stay after school to work on the project."

During competition, each team will make a ten-minute presentation comprised of four segments:

Preliminary competition begins at 9 a.m., followed by finals competition at noon in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. Winning classes will receive cash prizes to implement their business ideas or to pursue other classroom projects.
