UNION UNIVERSITY OPERA WORKSHOP TO PRESENT THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD APRIL 18, 20-22

JACKSON, March 22-- Union University's Opera Workshop will present Gilbert and Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard April 18, 20, 21, and 22 in the University's Harvey Lecture Hall. All performances begin at 8 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday, April 21 performance, which begins at 2:30 p.m.

The Yeomen of the Guard will be presented uncut, lasting approximately two hours and 20 minutes. The 1888 comic opera takes place at the Tower of London in the Elizabethan era. It tells the story of Colonel Fairfax, a man unjustly condemned to die who marries in haste to thwart an unworthy heir. He later escapes, only to face the consequences of his unwise marriage.

The Yeomen of the Guard has the most beautiful music of the Gilbert and Sullivan canon," Michael Penny, director of the workshop, said. It is less well-known, because the characters are more skillfully drawn, and the ending may even be considered tragic!"

The student cast will be accompanied by pianists Pam Dennis and Doris Lawrence, and a chorus provided by the Union University Singers.

Tickets are $5 and may be purchased from the University's box office at (901) 661-5105 or from the music office at (901) 661-5345.
