UNION UNIVERSITY TO CONFER HONORARY DOCTORATE MAY 25 AT COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

JACKSON, May 21-- Carolyn Townsend McAfee, formerly of Parsons, will receive an honorary doctor of humanics degree at Union University's commencement exercises Saturday, May 25. Activities will begin at 6 p.m. in Jackson's Oman Arena.

McAfee, a 1961 Union graduate, is active in many civic and charitable endeavors. An organ major during her days at Union, she is active as treasurer of the allegro division of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and is involved in the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers. The Visser-Rowland Pipe Organ located in Union's G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel was dedicated in honor of Mrs. McAfee in 1989.

She is married to James T. McAfee, Jr., a 1961 Union graduate and chairman of ValueMark Healthcare Corporation in Atlanta. Mrs. McAfee serves as vice president of the McAfee family's business ventures.

She is the daughter of Raymond and Sophia Townsend of Parsons, both 1932 Union graduates.

U.S. Representative Ed Bryant will deliver Union's commencement address. Approximately 450 Union seniors will receive degrees during the ceremony.

Bryant, who represents Tennessee's seventh congressional district in the 105th Congress, serves on the House Agriculture and Judiciary Committees, with additional duties in the House Task Force on Firearms and the Leader's Task Force on Legal Reform.

Bryant previously served as U.S. Attorney for Tennessee's Western District following appointment by President George Bush. His office ranked among the nation's top prosecutors of violent criminals, and Bryant helped pioneer a task force system to investigate abuse and fraud within the health care system.

Baccalaureate services will begin at 10:50 a.m. in Union's G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. Charles Taylor, chair of the department of philosophy and religious studies at Radford University in Radford, Va., will serve as baccalaureate speaker. Taylor, a 1948 Union graduate, served as the University's academic dean from 1966-1968 and as professor of religion and philosophy from 1955-1966.
