JACKSON, MAY 30-- Union University's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team recently captured third runner-up honors during international competition in Kansas City, Mo.
The Union team, which celebrates its second consecutive top five finish, also captured "Halt the Deficit" honors for educating the community about the national debt, plus the "Success 2000" award for projects geared toward the economically disadvantaged.
"The team really did Union proud in competition," SIFE advisor Bevalee Pray said. "There were only five points difference between the top four teams in a 450 team field, and that's quite an accomplishment."
The team sponsored 104 projects during the 1995-96 academic year, the group's third year of existence. Projects included a "Junior SIFE" competition for area middle schools, an "Erase the Deficit" 5K run, Young Professionals Night and an Economic Outlook Conference.
The Union team won a berth in national competition by capturing a third consecutive regional championship this April in Memphis. The group swept regional competition, winning a third consecutive regional "Halt the Deficit" championship, and a second Success 2000 award.
SIFE competitions are judged by upper-level executives representing several Fortune 500 companies, including, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, and Valvoline.
"Several of our students received jobs or interview opportunities because of the exposure they gained from SIFE competition," Pray said. "SIFE has given them the opportunity to show their talents to some of America's business leaders."
Students in Free Enterprise is an international, not-for-profit organization that promotes a better understanding and greater appreciation of the free enterprise system. SIFE's membership includes almost 50,000 undergraduates in 343 colleges and universities.
